Instructor: Professor Jonathan Slapin, University of Essex

This course surveys methods for systematically extracting quantitative information from text for social scientific purposes. It covers classical content analysis and dictionary-based methods, classification methods, and state-of-the-art scaling methods and topic models for estimating quantities from text. This course will teach you practical skills for applying these methods in your own research, as well as the theoretical foundations of text analysis. Using a practical hands-on approach, each technique will be applied in lab sessions, on real texts.
